Streams in the Wasteland is a 31-day devotional aimed at finding hope in the hardships of life. With the intertwining of two deeply personal stories of hardship and heartache, one of a battle with ovarian cancer, another with infertility; this devotion explores searching for hope on the dark days.
Over the next couple of weeks I’m going to be sharing a bit more of the stories behind Streams in the Wasteland.
Graci’s Story: This Story for His Glory
Gracia Gillming was an incredible faith inspiration to many as she endured a battle with ovarian cancer. Her story touched hundreds, if not thousands, of lives as her family documented the enduring journey from diagnosis, through treatment, to Graci’s final passage Home at the age of 63. Graci was a woman of faith and example to many; she was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a daughter, an aunt, and a dear friend.
Graci’s daughters, Tenise and Christal, assisted in sharing their mother’s journey via an online medical journal to keep friends and family informed and updated on her condition. What they could not predict was the impact they were making for the Kingdom in the process. Interweaved between the medical updates were courageous stories of faith and examples of love and hope that were nothing short of inspirational to all who were reading along. Graci’s light shone so brightly for her Father in her battle of ovarian cancer that she became a beacon of hope to anyone she came in contact with.
Graci was determined to let her story be used for His glory. She moved through her trial of cancer with grace and dignity. Streams in the Wasteland shares excerpts from Graci’s online journal as written by herself and her two daughters. May her story continue to live on for His glory via the pages of this devotional and may you grow closer to God in your personal relationship with Him as a result of reading it!
As you already know if you read last week’s post, Graci’s journey is a major inspiration for me through the trials I’m faced with in this life. As I read Graci and her daughters’ hope-filled anecdotes that became Graci’s testimony during her fight with ovarian cancer, I knew I wanted to get her story into even more hands somehow.
At first it was a simple compilation of the entries from her online medical journal to share with the Gillming family and others that were closely connected to Graci. I was brainstorming ideas for how to develop Graci’s story further when my efforts were sidelined by my own journey—a recent diagnosis of endometriosis, which has led to a battle with infertility.
I never imagined I’d be faced with such a hardship. And I’ve found myself leaning on Graci’s advice and the Words of the Bible more than ever. After sharing more of my story here on the blog, I felt called to find a way to share my hope in this hardship.
And thus, the idea for Streams in the Wasteland: 31 Days of Devotions for Finding Hope in the Hardship was born.
