What does it mean to be a Wife on Fire?

Well, for a much, much deeper meaning behind the meaning of a Wife on Fire, you may want to check out last year’s post. Let’s just say I got a little dictionary happy. 🙂

However, here we are kicking off our second annual Wife on Fire Challenge and I think it’s important to know what you are getting yourself into.

So, first of all, if you are here reading this blog post on the topic of the Wife on Fire Challenge, I’m gonna say there’s a decent chance you fulfill the role of a wife.

But, are you a Wife on Fire?

A Wife on Fire is determined to make an effort in her marriage, daily, consistently. She chooses intentional marriage. Over and over again.

She is a Wife on Fire for her marriage. She is determined to not let the fire go out–to keep the passion burning and growing into an everlasting love, into a Marriage on Fire.

Fire may start out as a small flicker, but it can grow quickly into a raging firestorm. In choosing to be a Wife on Fire for your marriage you are sending out a beacon, a smoke signal, to other wives in the culture today. Your role as a Wife on Fire is a powerful testimony to others watching.

This year’s Wife on Fire Challenge will be set up similarly to last year’s. Over the course of 4 weeks here on Country Wife Chronicles I’ll be blogging all about intentional marriage and encouraging you to make small efforts in the name of love for your spouse.

So, let’s get started with Week 1 of the second annual Wife on Fire Challenge!

Selecting a Marriage Mission Verse

A Wife on Fire forms and relies on a firm faith foundation for her marriage. She seeks the Bible as an instruction manual for her marriage and as a lesson in learning to love unconditionally.

And, so, today we are going to choose a Bible verse that represents your marriage relationship. A verse that will guide you in your role as a Wife on Fire for your marriage. A Marriage Mission Verse.

So, what does selecting a Marriage Mission Verse look like?

Just over 10 years ago, Wildland Man and I chose a foundational marriage verse a few days before we officially wed. We searched the Bible for a verse that made sense for us, one that we could believe in and strive toward fulfilling as a married couple.

We chose Colossians 3:12-14 as our Marriage Mission Verse.

For us, this verse represents how we want to treat one another in our marriage relationship. It reminds us to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. It instills the importance of forgiving one another. And it reminds us that above all, we are to choose love.

I think the act of selecting a Marriage Mission Verse is a very real, tangible approach to building a marriage on a foundation of faith. Ideally, you and your spouse would select Scripture as a basis for your marriage relationship together. But, if your hubby isn’t willing to sift through the Bible with you, you can still search the Scriptures for a Promise that you can build upon as a foundation for your marriage and family.

Once you’ve selected your Marriage Mission Verse, it is important to keep it somewhere so that you can be constantly reminded of it. Get creative and find a way to be reminded of it daily.

Personally, I wrote our verse out on a notecard and I keep it in our study Bible. Every time we open up the Bible to read an excerpt, we are reminded of our Biblical Promise to one another in marriage. I’ve also heard of people inscribing one or two words from their Marriage Mission Verse on their wedding rings. And I’ve often thought about the idea of finding a beautiful wall hanging of our Marriage Mission Verse from Colossians to hang in our bedroom.

I’m certain there are several more ideas you could come up with. Just check Pinterest to get inspired!

Of course, there are several verses in the Bible that can be applied to a marriage relationship. Check out Proverbs, or some of the Psalms. 1 Corinthians 13 is all about love and the Song of Solomon is pure romance. Just check out the topical index of your Bible or do a little Internet searching; I know you’ll find a verse that represents you and your husband’s marriage well.

Wife on Fire Challenge – Week 1 Intentional Effort

But wait; don’t go yet!

In true Wife on Fire Challenge form, I have to announce this week’s intentional effort for your marriage.

So, yeah…you are kinda getting double homework on the first week of this year’s Wife on Fire Challenge. Blame it on my teaching roots…

I really do think selecting a Marriage Mission Verse is crucial in founding and grounding your marriage in faith. But, the Wife on Fire Challenge is all about intentionality. It’s about getting you in the habit of making an effort for your spouse, for 4 weeks straight.

So, I’ll be quick with it. Here’s today’s Challenge:

That’s right, I’m just asking you to take a moment to tidy up your home this week. Maybe the laundry is a bit out of control. Or the dishes are overflowing a bit more than usual. Maybe it’s just been a minute since you last dusted?

Take some time this week to straighten up your house and make your home feel like a sanctuary. Creating a home environment that welcomes your husband in and provides comfort for you both builds up your marriage relationship. So, spiff up your digs, light some candles, and create a warm and inviting home atmosphere.

Oh, and now that your home will be all pretty—maybe you can find a prominent place to hang up your Marriage Mission Verse!

Let your home be a reminder of your faith-founded marriage. Let your sanctuary support your marriage relationship. Show your husband that you desire to create a home atmosphere that is full of love and encouragement.

And hey, and I never said you had to do the cleaning! If your home is in a current state of overwhelm, then bite the bullet and hire yourself a cleaning service, or even a professional home organizer. Whatever you need to clear the clutter and get your home back on track. Trust me, if your home is a wreck, this one effort can make a huge improvement in your marriage and in your mental sanity!
